Tara Costello writes in Travelblog: "That night we ate at the greatest hole in the wall German restaurant ever! [...] Walking into this restaurant out of the cold, crisp German air was like walking into Fezziwig’s party in “A Christmas Carol.” There was a fireplace roaring, dim lighting held to pace with candles atop every table and along the bar counter, tiny round tables with smiling satisfied faces circling round them, and an aroma we smelt from four doors down of something savory and delectable. We drank mulled wine and slurped up a soup made from potato, sweet chestnut, and mushroom before salivating over one of the best bratwursts I’ve ever had the pleasure of consuming. Of course with a find this good, we went two nights in a row :)"

Considered to have the best chicken in Berlin (and that's it...)
Reviews:
This historical restaurant, which had the Wall on its doorstep in Kreuzberg, serves one thing mostly: grilled chicken. But it is considered to be the best in it.
Bradley Chodos-Irvine writes in his blog: "we [...] had dinner at a little restaurant named Henne - they have been open since 1908 or something like and serve chicken. A 1/2 Roast chicken is the only thing on the menu - but it was very good, particulary after walking forever during the day."

Rikes Gasthaus (Rike's Restaurant)
Style:
Berlin Cuisine, German
More:
The restaurant claims to apply recipes from old cookbooks, reviving the old Berlin cuisine, and is appropriately located at a hotel called "Alt Berlin" (Old Berlin); allegedly recipes left to Rike by her grandmother
Reviews:
"Mediterranean Girl" writes in her travel journal, "the food was delicious. [...] traditional Wiener Schnitzel [...] which came with a huge salad and lots of oniony, pan-fried potatoes. It was huge – it absolutely covered my plate and it was very tasty. My partner ordered a traditional pot-roast of beef that was served with a rich gravy, mountains of vegetables and heaps of oniony, pan-fried potatoes. He really enjoyed it and I saw what the waiter meant about a starter being too much. The dessert menu was rather simple. [...] The atmosphere was rather cosy. [...] t appeared to be a place couples would go rather than large groups of people or families with young children. " Menus are available in English.

Lindenbräu
Style:
German, Bavarian, Berlin Cuisine
More:
A similar branch is located at the Hauptbahnhof, the Hopfingerbräu
Reviews:
Lindenbräu is not where you'll be heading, if you're looking for a quaint restaurant attended mostly by the locals. On the other hand, those small, quaint, restaurants, almost never accept credit cards, have menus only in German, no access to disabled persons and a staff that hardly speaks any language, including German.
Lindenbräu is the opposite: it is a large restaurant in one of the most touristy places imaginable: the Sony Centre in Potsdamer Platz. But being a "touristy" German restaurant has many advantages: not only that the menu comes in four languages, it also has pictures of the dish, so you will understand what it is all about; the waiters speak English; and the restaurant accepts credit cards and has wheelchair access. The so-touristy location also means that you have a view, if you choose to - sit close to the window or in the yard, you will get a wonderful view on the futuristic architecture of Sony Centre and its fountain. If you choose to sit close to the centre, you will see the brewery from a close distance.
The food is a mixed version of all types of regional German food, with heavy Bavarian and southern influence; but also with typical Berlin dishes, such as the Eisbein (pork knuckle). Unlike many German restaurants around town, this one offers a variety of dishes to vegetarians, those who won't eat pork, and the like. The dishes are not small, so prepare to leave some or come hungry.
The Basics: Sony Center, 10785 Berlin-Tiergarten (U+S Potsdamer Platz)

Top German Food for not so top prices
Reviews:
Berlinbound writes on "German Diary": "Let me say at the outset that the food was sublime. [...] For starters I had what the restaurant called, “Ragout Fin” which was a small puff-pastry filled with a mixture of chicken, beef and parmeggiano cheese, covered with hollandaise sauce and surrounded by a delicate but spicy apricot chutney – it took my breath away. The main course was rabbit stew with Mediterranean vegetables served with a potato dumpling and a mixed salad. The rabbit and vegetables were cooked to perfection, the vegetables soft and savory, the meat infused with onion and peppers and just a hint of something stronger. The dumpling was never heavy, I could feel the texture of the vegetable in my mouth, the food was still living, not ground and pounded and processed to death like so much of what we are subjected to in restaurants today. Desert was something from the deep recesses of the imagination … fried nut and poppy noodles served with caramelized plums in a bourbon vanilla sauce. I will only say that the thrill of eating this dessert was probably equal to the thrill of whatever the redhead down the street had to offer and it only set me back five Euros! I selected a Spanish wine, Faustino Crianza Rioja, and it had just the right weight and texture to play with this food. The entire meal was under thirty Euros.
The restaurant is called, Assel, and it was the first establishment opened on the Oranienburger Strasse after the Wall came down. The original owner has returned to her first love of teaching, but her brother Christopher has kept the restaurant in the family and from what I can see he is doing a terrific job. [...]."
