Engelbecken

Style:
German/Swiss/Austrian and "Alpine"

More:

Reviews:
Fodor's recommends this restaurant:
"The beer coasters are trading cards of the Wittelsbach dynasty in this relaxed but high-quality restaurant serving dishes from Bavaria and the Alps. Classics like Wiener schnitzel, goulash, and grilled saddle steak are made of "bio" meat and vegetable products, meaning that even the veal, lamb, and beef are the tasty results of organic and humane upbringing. In warm weather, reserve a sidewalk table. With its corner position facing a park bordering Lake Lietzensee, Engelbecken is a lovely open-air dining spot."

Witzlebenstr. 31, 14057 Berlin-Charlottenburg (U Sophie-Charlotte-Platz)

The restaurant is a bit off the beaten path, unless you came to a convention at the convention centre ("Messe"), in which case it is one of the best restaurants close to the ICC/Messe area.

However, it is not entirely out of interest for the "regular" tourist. First of all, the restaurant lies on the banks of the Lietzensee lake, which is a very nice spot; it is not far from the Charlottenburg Palace (and hence could be integrated into a guided tour in the Charlottenburg Palace and its museums); and there are several sites of Jewish interest in the area, which could be integrated to a Jewish Life in West Berlin tour; and the restaurant could be also integrated with customised Berlin tours

Nearby Hotels/Accommodation:

Note: because of the proximity to the ICC convention centre, many of these hotels are very simple ones, catering the traveller to the Messe exhibitions and trade fairs.

Organic ("bio") and health food restaurant. Vegetarians would probably be happy to know that if they don't mind eating with carnivores, there are many vegetarian dishes on the menu.

Reviews:
BioBerlin is a German Language blog discussing all aspects of healthy living and eating in Berlin. Although we personally haven't been to the restaurant, we agree with BioBerlin about this being an oasis in Potsdamer Platz, only from knowing the other cheesy places in this otherwise culinary desert. We'll free translate the main points of BioBerlin's review: The restaurant is somewhat hidden near the Casino in Potsdamer Platz. The idea behind it: healthy, fresh cuisine. There are wholegrain pastas, salads, also the regular mundane stuff but very tasty wok-dishes. The most important thing is that all dishes are fresh, healthy and low in calories. The coolest thing: the meat is organic! They don't write it anywhere, and only after we've asked, they said that the meat as well as many other ingredients are organic, including for example an organic beer. The food was good, it was quickly prepared, the service was very cordial. The prices are affordable: the main dish costs 7 EUR.
